On April 7. and 8. 2025, the Scientific Computing Center is hosting an in person Software Carpentry workshop, primarily open to graduate students and research staff at KIT.
 
What is a Software Carpentry Workshop ?
A growing number of researchers spend more and more time building and using software, but few have ever been taught how to do this efficiently. In many cases they end up spending more time than necessary to create results whose reliability and reproducibility is not ensured.
The aim of Software Carpentry is to teach researchers the fundamental skills that will help them be more productive while producing work of higher quality. We do that by teaching workshops where students learn how to automate tasks using the Unix shell, how to track and share work using version control, and how to write software in Python, R, or MATLAB that is readable, reusable, and reliable.
During a workshop, short tutorials alternate with practical exercises, and all instruction is done via live coding (i.e. learners write their code along with the instructors).
 
This two-days workshop will cover the following topics:
-    Automating tasks using the Unix shell
-    Version control using Git
-    Introduction to programming with Python
 
This session is intended for students and researchers who have little to no prior programming experience: lessons are designed for beginners and no prior knowledge on the tools that will be presented is required to attend the workshop.

Für Internetautritte von Einrichtungen des KIT betreibt das SCC das Content-Management System OpenText Web Site Management (WSM). Das System ermöglicht ein einfaches Erstellen und Bearbeiten von Webseiten ohne Programmierkenntnisse und stellt dafür Vorlagen im Corporate Design des KIT zur Verfügung.
In der kurzen Einführungsveranstaltung lernen Sie den Umgang mit dem Redaktionssystem und können Ihre eigenen Websites damit gestalten. Neben den Grundlagen zu Templates und RedDot-Strukturen erhalten Sie wertvolle Tipps zum Umgang mit dem System.
Die Veranstaltung richtet sich (nur) an Mitarbeitende und Hiwis von Instituten, Fakultäten und Einrichtungen des KIT!

OpenFOAM(R) is an open-source package for simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer problems in engineering, nature, biological and astrophysical systems.
 
As a joint effort of bwHPC-S5 and NHR@KIT, the Scientific Computing Center (SCC) is hosting an introductory level course on the parallel use of OpenFOAM software for (current and future) users of the bwUniCluster (bwForClusters) or HoreKa supercomputers.
 
Short description:
The first day of the course aims at gaining basic skills for the work with OpenFOAM on the supercomputers in Baden-Württemberg. In Rechenzentren werden viele Computer gleichzeitig benötigt und in Schränken - sogenannten "Racks" - mit bis zu 80 Computern betrieben. Solche Rackserver könnt Ihr Euch bei uns genauer anschauen und lernt dabei die einzelnen Bauteile eines Supercomputerservers zu bestimmen.
 
Außerdem könnt Ihr Euer Geschick bei der "PC-Challenge" beweisen.

On May 9, 2023, the first RSE workshop @ KIT took place to mark the kick-off the KIT-internal (unfunded) subproject 9.1.4 as part of KIT's digitalization strategy.
 
The project team now would like to invite you to the 2nd Workshop on RSE @ KIT on July, 7, 2025, to present what was achieved and build up in the 2 years project runtime, and to foster community building among RSEs and those interested in RSE.

The aim of the NHR conferences is to bring together HPC users working on selected topics, varying each year. Users of the NHR Centers will have the opportunity to present their projects in a poster session or contributed talk, and to exchange ideas with the consulting and operational teams of the NHR-Centers. 

For next year's conference at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, the topics are: 
• AI in Social Sciences 
• Life Sciences
• Data Management & Storage

Join us in Tübingen on September 23rd for the 11th bwHPC Symposium, an interdisciplinary conference spotlighting scientific projects and success stories leveraging high-performance computing and the BaWü data federation in the context of bwHPC-S5. Tübingen, the host city, is home to our bwForCluster BinAC2 for Bioinformatics, Astrophysics, Geosciences, Medical Informatics and Pharmacy. It also serves as coordinator for the HPC Competence Center for Bioinformatics and Astrophysics in Baden-Württemberg. The bwHPC-Symposium is a yearly event, free for all scientists in Baden-Württemberg. It fosters active dialogue between researchers, bwHPC service operators, and members of the bwHPC-S5 support centers.
