Helmholtz Analytics Framework (HAF)

The Helmholtz Analytics Framework (HAF) pilot project will strengthen the development of data sciences in the Helmholtz Association. Together with four other Helmholtz Centres, a co-design approach between domain scientists and data analysis experts investigates challenging application problems from the respective Helmholtz Centres. Specifically, these are questions on earth system modelling, structural biology, aerospace, neurosciences and medical imaging.

Helmholtz Analytics Framework (HAF)

The Helmholtz Association strengthens its competence in Information & Data Science and funds five research projects, including the Helmholtz Analytics Framework.

Description

The Helmholtz Analytics Framework (HAF) pilot project, jointly coordinated by KIT and Forschungszentrum Jülich, will strengthen the development of data sciences in the Helmholtz Association. Together with four other Helmholtz Centres, DESY, DKFZ, DLR and HMGU, a co-design approach between domain scientists and data analysis experts investigates challenging application problems from the respective Helmholtz Centres. Specifically, these are questions on earth system modelling, structural biology, aerospace, neurosciences and medical imaging.

For this purpose, the most modern analytical methods are used, which have the potential to achieve fundamental scientific breakthroughs and expand the state of research. The systematic exchange between the scientific fields is also intended to identify common features. An essential aim of the project is to transform these into generic data analysis tools and services and to make them available for the project participants and later also for other domains.

From a technical point of view, the HAF is based on the platform of the Helmholtz Data Federation (HDF), the future hardware and support backbone of the Helmholtz Association. The software solutions developed within HAF are adapted to these computing systems, tested and operated on them. The Helmholtz Analytics Framework was launched in October 2017 and is funded with nearly three million euros.
