By developing a decentralized electronic laboratory book, researchers and scientists at KIT will in the future also use many advantages of digitization in laboratory documentation.
EDEL - Development of a decentralized electronic laboratory notebook
In most laboratories, information such as measurement results, experiment configurations, special features and remarks on scientific investigations are often recorded in handwritten form - with all the associated disadvantages: Poor searchability, hybrid data storage and resulting data loss.
The aim of the project Development of a decentralized electronic laboratory notebook, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is to provide researchers with an open source laboratory notebook that is optimally tailored to their needs. This Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) will initially be designed to meet the requirements of chemists. In further steps, modules for use in biology will also be integrated. The ELN will be complemented by a repository that will enable the storage and publication of chemical information.
The novel laboratory book is intended to remedy previous shortcomings in data collection and in the safeguarding of analytical and synthetic data in academic laboratories. In addition, novel methods for the provision of information will be established alongside the traditional form of publication. The focus is on the availability of data for all researchers, but also on the functionality of suitable long-term storage. The project is being carried out jointly by the Institute of Organic Chemistry (IOC), the KIT library and the Scientific Computing Center (SCC).
