• Serverhousing

  • The server housing service provides data center space for KIT organisational units to operate servers. Cabinets are provided for this purpose, which can be rented. Power, cooling, network bandwith and physical security are included. The cabinets are available in two different sizes and are offered with different network equipment. This results in four different packages that can be booked.

The server housing service is currently only available at Campus South. The service is currently in pilot operation and will be reviewed after one year.

The pilot operation is expected to start in February 2025.

You can book the service via the Serverhousing ticket as follows:
Login as customer in the ticket system. New process ticket:

Select SCC: Serverhousing request from the drop-down menu.

What is a server cabinet?

A server cabinet is a separate and lockable unit of a server rack in different height units (HE). We offer 1/3 cabinets (small) and 1/2 cabinets (large). We provide the following technical equipment for each cabinet: Two UPS-buffered PDUs with 6x C13 and 3x C19 sockets for redundant power supply are installed in each cabinet. These are monitored by SCC. The maximum power consumption for a 1/3 cabinet is 2kW and for a 1/2 cabinet is 3kW. Cooling is based on the principle of a hot aisle/cold aisle setup with a cold aisle temperature of 25°C and front to back airflow. All installed systems must comply with this airflow and cooling concept to ensure smooth operation. Unused HEs must be closed with panels.

Network connection in the server cabinet

Each server cabinet contains a fiber optic patch panel with 12 single-mode fiber pairs; the connections are designed as E2000/APC. The fibre optic cables for connecting the servers (E2000 duplex to LC/UPC duplex) are provided by SCC. Additional switches with copper ports (see basic package 2) are installed in the cabinet (therefore 1 U less) and are managed by SCC.

Energy costs

Due to the currently different handling of energy budgeting at KIT, the energy costs for the UA are shown but not charged. In the GFA, the energy costs are allocated as usual. The respective billing scheme is determined based on the cost center.

Access

A maximum of 5 users per cabinet receive access to the housing room (24/7) via Siport activation.
