KIT user account - KIT account
-
The KIT user account, also known as the KIT account, is the basis for many IT services in the KIT network for all KIT members. It provides access to systems and services and is generally used as a "login" in the KIT environment.

General information
The KIT user account (also KIT account) enables employees, students, guests and partners of KIT to use various IT services within the KIT network. For example, an e-mail inbox linked to the KIT user account is provided with an e-mail address (for employees of the form vorname.nachname@kit.edu, for students of the form uabcd@student.kit.edu, for guests and partners of the form vorname.nachname@partner.kit.edu); alias addresses can also be defined. The account is used to log in within the KIT domain KIT.EDU and can be equipped with various other rights, such as VPN authorization, printer access, file storage, etc. Access to the KIT Intranet, Campus Management, other OU portals (e.g. SCC Self-Service Portal) or web servers is also controlled via this account.
KIT accounts for employees, guests and partners have the form "ab1234", KIT accounts for students have the form "uabcd"; they are unique within KIT. When logging in to most KIT IT services, the e-mail address can also be used as an alternative user ID.
Assignment, receipt and activation of the KIT user account for KIT employees
The KIT user account is initiated by a data record from the personnel management system (HR system). When a new employee joins KIT, the HR system provides the relevant data, defines the user account and e-mail address, and sets the initial authorizations. In addition, the new employee is sent an in-house letter with the initial password and an activation address (online activation on the intranet) to the home organizational unit (OU). After activation, the options associated with the user account are available in the KIT network, for example the services listed in the employee portal. In order to obtain a KIT user account, a data record from the HR system must be supplied, i.e. no KIT user account can be created without an entry in the HR system. If there are any problems with this, please contact the HR administrator responsible for your organizational unit at PSE.
Name changes: If an employee's name changes (marriage, incorrectly recorded ...), this must be changed in Personnel Administration in order to be delivered to SCC. If the assigned KIT account (e-mail address ...) is also to be changed as a result, this must be initiated in a ticket request (or via the SCC ServiceDesk); this is NOT done automatically. Until this is done, only the previous e-mail address is assigned to an account, not the address corresponding to the changed name! When adjusting the UPN of the account by changing the name, please note that the previous UPN may be used as the login name in systems and must then also be adjusted there.
Further information on activation can be found in the service description Activation of employee, guest and partner accounts.
Assignment, receipt and activation of the KIT user account for KIT students
The KIT user account is initiated by a data record from the student service. Upon successful enrolment, the corresponding data is provided by the student service, the user account and a pseudonymized e-mail address are defined, and the initial authorizations are set. In addition, the new student is sent a letter with the initial password and an activation address (online activation on the intranet) to the address registered by the Student Office. Once the account has been activated in the student portal, students have access to the options associated with the user account in the KIT network, such as the services listed under Student Info. In order to receive a KIT user account, the delivery of a data record by the student service is mandatory, i.e. no KIT user account can be created without a successful entry in the student service . If you have any problems with this, please contact the person responsible for you in Student Services .
Assignment, receipt and activation of the KIT user account for guests and partners of KIT
See the service description for guest and partner administration (GuP) and the service description for activating employee, guest and partner accounts.
Changing the password for the user account
Please change your initial password immediately after activation. Employees, students, guests and partners can do this at any time in the SCC self-service portal via the link https://my.scc.kit.edu/shib/passwort.php.
Deactivation of a KIT user account
KIT accounts are only made available for the duration of the KIT membership. If a KIT member or employee leaves, the account will receive a corresponding e-mail notification in the corresponding mailbox, and the account and mailbox will be deactivated after a further month (date to be specified). A period of six months applies for students. Guests and partners are deactivated immediately (the supervisors of the guest and partner administration defined in the organizational units receive an info mail about the expiry of a GuP account they have created in good time beforehand).
In order to enable orderly processes in the OU of the affected account until deactivation, the list of IT contact persons of the OU also receives this e-mail information in the case of employees, guests and partners.
Special cases:
- Lecturers who were registered with the role of lecturer at SCC by the Personnel Service (PSE). In your case, the following special regulation applies: Since you will continue to be available for examinations, questions regarding the lecture, etc. and will also need access to the lecture workspace (VAB), your account will continue to be operated by SCC for this purpose for one year and will only be blocked on the corresponding date specified in the e-mail.
- Emeritus (retired professor): Individuals whose user accounts carry this status are supplied by PSE to SCC for life, i.e. these accounts do not expire/retire. For this reason, such an account will continue to be supplied with the employee authorizations, for example with ASKnet or with the library services.
Note for extensions of employee contracts
If the SCC receives notification of a contract extension or a new contract from the Personnel Service (PSE) before the end of the monthly period (for lecturers before the end of the annual period), any deactivation process that has already been initiated will be aborted and the employee concerned and the ITB list of the organizational unit will be informed of this again by e-mail! The KIT deprovisioning regulations apply.
