Please note that the University of Tübingen has ended the state-wide license agreement at short notice. The current offers do not allow the extension of entire amount of licenses that KIT used with the budget defined in 2024. The licenses expired on 30.09. We are currently renegotiating and hope that new licenses will be made available with the next days.
SPSS is an alternative program to the statistical parts of SAS and is mainly used in the social sciences. Depending on the area of application, one or the other program offers advantages. However, possibilities for the exchange of data with databases or for the use of computer networks for extensive evaluations and likewise a number of other possibilities of SAS are not provided.
Scope of the license
The license is based on the state license for the universities of the state of Baden-Württemberg and is restricted to the area of research and teaching. It is an SPSS Statistics Premium Campus Edition and an SPSS Amos Campus Edition license and currently includes the following modules:
- Statistics Base
- Advanced Statistics
- Bootstrapping
- Categories
- Conjoint
- Complex Samples
- Custom Tables
- Data Preparation
- Decision Trees
- Direct Marketing
- Exact Tests
- Forecasting
- Missing Values
- Neural Networks
- Regression

Availability at KIT
SPSS is installed in some pool rooms at the SCC. In addition, members of KIT can install SPSS on their own computers in the context of teaching and research and use the licenses of the license server operated by SCC - free of charge until further notice. The prerequisite is that the computer on which SPSS is used is connected to the KIT network.
Use on external computers outside KIT is only possible via a VPN connection to the KIT network ( OpenVPN is recommended). Please note that VPN accesses require authorization with KIT user account.
Commuter licenses that can be used independently of the Internet are not available. If a secure connection to the license server is not guaranteed in case of a temporary absence from KIT, it is possible to use the free trial version offered by IBM (maximum duration of use: 14 days). You can find the link to it on the WWW pagehttps://www.ibm.com/de-de at the very bottom under "Free trial versions".
License server
The license server operated by the SCC is
- scclic4.scc.kit.edu
Software Download and Installation
Students and employees of KIT can obtain the software as a download version in the context of research and teaching via the portal of the SCC software store. Students use the free version with use of the network license. For KIT employees, SPSS is available in two versions: both a free network license version and a single-user rental license version for which a fee is charged.
In order to use the SPSS network license at SCC, please make sure during the installation that the license type License for concurrent users (for older versions the installation type Network license) is set. Only then a license server will be asked for. As license server scclic4.scc.kit.edu is to be specified.
Further details about the installation can be found in the table bar "Installation instructions".

3. rights and obligations of the end users
ln the sections "Authorized Universities" and "Restrictions of Use" (in this order of precedence) the provisions for the use of the Software by the End Users as well as the obligations of the End Users when using this Software are shown. The IBM License Terms and Conditions (IPLA) to be accepted upon installation of the Software shall not apply. The participating university assures to pass on these provisions (sections 5 and 6) to its purchasers.
4 Liability
The parties agree that the liability of the participating universities for claims resulting from the contract in favor of ASKNET shall be excluded, unless such claims relate to the participating university's own area of responsibility or liability due to intentional acts. Each participating university shall independently assume liability for its facilities.
5 Eligible Facilities
All internal organizational units and all facilities, regardless of their legal form, whose sponsor is predominantly the participating university are entitled to use the facilities. Institutions that have been recognized by the participating university in accordance with the State Higher Education Act are entitled to use the facilities if they perform tasks within the meaning of these laws that cannot be adequately performed by the participating university alone (so-called an-institutes).
Each participating university in turn grants software usage rights to its end customers, its "authorized users" (see "Usage Restrictions"). The transfer of licenses to non-participating universities or other institutions is not permitted.
6. usage restrictions
Definition of "Authorized Users
Entitled users are the members and affiliates of the participating universities and other persons who work directly on behalf of or for the respective university, or who use its services in the legally defined areas of responsibility ("end users of the university"). Use is permitted exclusively in a non-commercial context and exclusively for the fulfillment of the statutory tasks of the higher education institutions (generally use in research, teaching, study, promotion of young academics, knowledge transfer). Private, non-commercial use by authorized users is included (see "home use").
Non-commercial work in the statutory areas of responsibility of a university is understood to mean work in which.
(i) the results of the work are not primarily reserved for a third party;
(ii) copies of the results are made available at no more than the cost of providing, duplicating, and shipping them
The use of the programs is permitted on computers that cannot be assigned to individual persons (e.g. in PC pools) as long as it is ensured that the software can only be used by authorized users. ln this case, if no CU licenses are used, one AU license is required per device.
Authorized Users have the right to install the Software on up to two (AU License) Devices per License, as long as only the Authorized User uses the Products and the different installations (Instances) are not used simultaneously.
The software may also be backed up in installed or frozen form for recovery or cloning purposes and is therefore not subject to licensing.
The framework agreement permits the use of older versions of the products ("downgrade right"). The upgrade right (within the term of the agreement), as well as the language, version or platform change are part of the right of use.
The participating university has the right to make the respective data carriers available digitally as a download or in the form of a copy for authorized users in a controlled manner.
The customer is not entitled to reingeer or decompile the software, unless this is necessary to establish the interoperability of the customer's existing software with the contractual software. This in turn is subject to the limits of §§ 69 a ff, UrhG. Accordingly, the customer shall be entitled to such actions in particular only if ASKNET refuses to perform such work even against payment of a reasonable fee.

Authorization for "Virtual Computer Lab Use
The framework agreement contains the proper authorization for "Virtual Computer Lab Use". This entitles the participating university to use the listed products (concurrent user metric only) in virtual IT environments operated by or for the university. End users may access the programs on or off campus ("Virtual Computer Lab Use"), and the end devices are not considered part of the virtual IT environment. These end devices do not require their own usage rights as long as the products are installed in the virtual IT environment and not on the end devices ("Streaming", "Remote Desktop Access") and usage is ensured exclusively by authorized users.
The right to virtualize the products locally is included in the usage rights. Each virtual instance is regarded as a separate device for which corresponding licenses must be kept available.
Authorization for "Home Use
The master agreement contains the proper authorization for "Home Use". This means that the authorized user is permitted to use the listed products on private computers ("Home Use", "Bring your own device", etc.). Use by third parties (unauthorized persons) is not permitted and must be prevented by appropriate measures.
